I've been playing this game since year 2. I started with an old PC and had 28 FPS as pre-reworked pk main. Now, years later, after i made 17 (!!!) ppl buy and play this game (16 of those quit within 2 weeks) I feel like there's not much going on for this game besides fashion. As a veteran of this game I want to share some thoughts with you and hope, the devs are going to see this and maybe reconsider some of their "design" choices.
I understand they updated the core combat to get rid of the turtle meta. The problem with standardizing light attack speeds is the following - while assassins have default light attacks nearly everyone else has status effects on them. Highlander for example: his first light has superior block (which then deals a lot more dmg), his chain lights have hyper armor. Pk throws 2 lights and it's not more than that. Let me make a list
Warden: double light for 15 dmg or top light with superior block
PK: light, 12 dmg
conq: infinite lights (i know there's a rework coming, but cmon, guys, you just nerf the [censored] out of conq and destroy every fun you could have with that hero)
lb: 12dmg lights, side enhanced
cent: still has triple lights (you removed orochi#s triple lights bc of spam? what about the other characters that still have it?)
glad: quadruple light
bp: superior lights all sides
wm: enhanced lights, medium hit stun on the second
gryphon: why in the fk do his double lights interrupt me in revenge?! [edit: it was said in the comments that double lights tend to do this]
raider: triple lights
berserker: hyper armor lights in chains (why is feinting a heavy into neutral light a chain again?)
wl: superior block + enhanced lights
valk: superior block + triple lights
hl: superior block light into hyper armor light. yeah, makes sense. best part is that finishing heavies then come as quick as some other heroes' light attacks xD
shaman: double lights for 15dmg
jorm: enhanced into undodgeable
kensei: triple light, last one has hyper armor (this is actually ridiculous if you think about it) (btw make his dodge heavy grant a light parry punish ty)
orochi: combo light mechanic
nobu: confirmed third light for bleed dmg after 2nd light hit
shinobi: double lights for 16dmg. have you seen the range btw?
aramusha: infinite light chain
hito: hyper armor finishing light
kyoshin: ... 18dmg (!!!) light from seku na (incl 3sec of not being able to react to anything in 4v4 or 2v2). otherwise superior block light (17dmg) into undodgeable (16). bash lights hit for 15. this guy makes a lot of sense, guys. well fking done.
tiandi: perfectly fine.
nuxia: triple lights, quick af, no dmg whatsoever. a good compromise.
jj: perfectly fine.
shaolin: perfectly fine - apart from the non-existing hitbox. have you ever tried to stab ppl in a 4v4 scenario? good luck on that one
zhanhu: unblockable light attacks - idk who came up with this...
pirate: undodgeable lights, that doesnt really finish anything. this guy is a topic on his own. my fking god is this guy a disaster in terms of balancing. holy fking [censored], ubi...
so to conclude this you see that there is a problem: there are characters who just "outlight" others. those who do often times also have a stable guard and more hp than assassins with reflex guard. what exactly is an assassin good for again? mobility? yeah, i see what you guys are doing with those recovery cancels. assassin is not a role anymore. it's a fking shame at best.
so what to do? maybe increase assassins light attack dmg. mayke stop throwing every fking mechanic thats in the game onto every new character + recovery cancels + infinite chains + no stamina cost at all. another idea would be to increase stamina cost for light attacks from non-assassins. maybe give every assassin a triple light chain and make non-assassins have double light chains at max.
to be honest, guys, there is so much you could do to balance things, but it seems that new characters get flashier and flashier. this leads to a constant imbalance that will never go away. CCU was a flop and everyone knows it. maybe do CCU2 and get your [censored] together. making 17 ppl pay you money to play this shitwreck of a game to then quit after 2 weeks should have some meaning to you devs. i cant get ppl back into this and im more and more [censored] myself about how things develope.
2. Same mechanic, other result
Don't you love it, when you GB someone but you bounce off bc he's rolling away? While you get caught in every roll - the very rare occasions you use it? I'm not a perma rolling troll, but sometimes, especially in 4v4s you want to roll. It feels like I'm getting GBed out of that most of the time, while i can never perform a GB when someone rolls from me. Feels bad.
Or what about Longbow? There are some heroes who take 3 seconds for the entire animation while Shugo almost shoots before he pulls the string. Why is that? Or why is there still a feat in the game which makes you absolutely unable to defend the commander in breach? You know what I'm talking about? exactly, it's WM's corruption. How is this balanced? Compare this to a fire flask, a nail bomb or a catapult. This is game changing - in a way that needs no skill and cannot be countered in any way. Maybe reconsider some of those feats and what they are capable of in certain game modes.
3. full guard
Don't you love it when you fight 2 kyoshins at the same time and both just hold down c? What exactly am I supposed to do in that situation? Attacking will lead to a full guard counter - since the fujin cuts practically make me unable to defend myself for about 2 seconds, the other one gets at least 1 heavy, rather 2 into that as well. Other option would to GB one of them. During that GB the other one simply interrupts me with a heavy or light. Bash? Same as GB. What I would need is a neutral unblockable. A better idea than to give every single hero in the cast a neutral unblockable is simply limiting the duration of full guards in general. I don't see a reason why anybody should be able to hold down c for the entirety of a game. Make it 2 or 3 seconds at max. If you don't make anything out of it, let them go into a recovery state in that they are punishable. Sounds great, right?
4. neutral unblockables
In my opinion there shouldn't be neutral unblockables at all. Pirate and raider can create so much pressure just by doing that - both are also soft feintable, the pirate even has hyper armor on that - like [censored], guys?
Especially when outnumbered, one guy can simply spam unblockable feint and you're screwed. Bad design - nothing more. Please remove this from the game. It is not necessary and it's definitely not healthy for the game. If you want to keep it, then for god's sake, let it take half the stamina bar. That I could tolerate.
5. recovery cancels
When you throw an attack that doesn't hit, then you can go for a chain attack. If it was a finisher, then you are screwed. You made a mistake - or rather the opponent reacted correctly so it should be able to punish you for that. This is when recovery cancels come into place. BP misses an attack, goes for full guard. Pirate misses an attack, goes for dodge heavy - most of the time he's not even GBable during that time. Aramusha can go for blade blockade - the list goes on. I have absolutely no idea why there are characters who have recovery cancel moves and the ones who do not. This is another example of imbalance at it's finest. To be completely honest, I would much prefer it if all recovery cancels would get taken out of the game. If you want to keep it then give it to everybody.
ty for the time and no apologies for language. you can tell im passionate about this topic. for honor has been one of my favorite games. now it feels like work: get your orders done in case they release some good content. it's a daily routine to spend time in for honor and get mad about it. i know no one who says he likes this game. everyone i ever met in this game said to me they hate it, they hate the community but they are addicted to it's uniqueness.
USE YOUR UNIQUENESS AND CREATE A GAME THAT'S WORTH PLAYING NOT ONLY FOR UNIQUE GAME MECHANICS BUT BECAUSE THE GAME IS ACTUALLY GOOD! MAKE IT GOOD AGAIN !!!
Thank you for your attention.
EDIT: some numbers changed due to comments
