    I noticed in the ACValhalla.ini file that even though I have Tobii Eye Tracking turned off in options it was still turned on in the ACValhalla.ini. So I changed the line under Options that said TobiiEnabled=1 to TobiiEnabled=0

    My last CTD was just after starting Templebrough fortress raid ..... Since changing the ACValhalla.ini file I completed the rest of the quests in the Ledecestrescire chapter, all the quests in the Grantebridgescire chapter and all the quests in the East Anglia chapter plus a bunch of World events and raids as well as the first quest in Asgard without a single crash.

    Tobii Eye Tracking doesn't seem to use the ACValhalla.ini file anymore (changing the setting in game doesn't change the ACValhalla.ini file) but apparently it was used sometime during development and what I suspect is going on here is there are some rogue code in a couple of routines that are still trying to make a call to the ACValhalla.ini and the game thinks Tobii is enabled when it isn't and it pukes to the desktop.

    I need some people with otherwise stable game (Meaning no low FPS or CPU/GPU usage problems) to verify this. There still could be a couple of crashes in the game where you crash every time due to other bugs but this should stop most of the completely random CTDs out of nowhere .... At least it has for me so far in about 15-17 straight hours of gameplay in several different areas

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

    @ubi-orion @longjohn119 Yeah, no dice.
    My ACValhalla.ini didn't have this option, so I inserted it, saved and tried to give it a try. Still crashed on the opening screen, like it did before.
    @longjohn119 would you mind sharing your .ini content?

    @rapozaum Here is my ACValhalla.ini, the Bold entry is the one I changed .... I highly recommend you use Notepad++ because Windows Notepad can mess up the formatting of some specialty text files. If you add it manually make sure it's under the Options header. This probably won't work in your case as this fixes random crashes during normal gameplay. If you are having a startup crash you probably have another problem

    @longjohn119 Thanks for the reply.
    Yeah, no luck, sadly.

    I've tried changing all the TobiETCEnabled to 0 aswell but no luck.
    My crashes are entirely random, sometimes on the splash screen, sometimes I get to load the game, sometimes when browsing the options menus. I can't see a pattern.

    @longjohn119 I had no idea what this Tobii even is, but experiencing random crashes led me to try this.
    And oddly enough, it seems to have helped, so far played maybe 7-8 hours without a crash in some 3 sittings. Normally, it'd have crashed
    some 4 times by now. Granted my PC is on the lower end, but without the CTDs it runs quite smooth, and hopefully will continue to do so haha.
    Anyhow, thank you for the solution!

    This fix should definitely be seen by more people experiencing these seemingly out of nowhere crashes.

    @nihil1375 In the first 18 hours I had 8 or 9 crashes ..... In the last 32 hours I had one crash, I went into the menu/map just as they started raising the mast and when I came back out of the menu it froze up .... That was 12 hours or so ago ..... I have yet to see an error in my Windows Event Viewer for any crashes and only once did the Ubisoft Connect app catch a crash and ask me to send it in

    @longjohn119 Well i only got Valhalla quite recently, so for me i believe the problems started with 1.3.1, could play some 2 hours till a crash, sometimes barely 10min. But if i wanted a longer session it'd almost always ended with crashing. Sometimes i got to send in the crash report, sometimes not. Event Viewer also not always posted an error, but when it did, it was apparently the "display driver stopped responding and successfully recovered" one. And i didn't rush to update drivers or anything, since everything else i play runs fine.

    @nihil1375 I got the game at release (Actually it was a AMD reward perk for buying a 3700X in July 2020) and I played the game for about a week before I quit because of the bugs .... I kept coming back after every update but kept seeing complaints of low FPS and CPU utilization (A problem I've never had) and then crashing problems plus a whole bunch of "unable to proceed in quest xxx" problems so I just let it lie. I also don't like that the Aim Assist seems to be mostly broken but after playing 200+ hours of Skyrim as an archer with no Aim Assist I was able to adapt and get by without it basically by "aiming with my feet" and learning to funnel enemy NPCs into doorways and steps and just plunk them as they come running directly at me. Right now I'm at the point where I hate the main quest missions because everyone just gets in my way (or I have Sigurd and Basim following me everywhere) and it's harder to recover arrows than when I go it alone. I must be pretty good at it compared to most people because nearly every quest or major location with enemies I'm avenging someone's death although that usually means finding the already dead bodies of NPCs I killed because I like to wipe everyone out so I can just walk around and get every piece of loot available

    @longjohn119 Yeah i've heard it had quite a rocky launch, but i thought by now it should be all stabile, since i've played both Origins and Odyssey well after launch and had no problems whatsoever. No low CPU utilization, and the lower fps in more crowded places is to be expected for me, also no quests seemed hopelessly bugged.
    Wouldn't know about aim assist to be fair, not using it myself. And avenge pop-ups seem to be a common thing, with the 'new quest accepted' spam once you touch anything, until you avenge said player. Isn't a terrible hassle either way since i also usually wipe locations and then pick up stuff.
    Crashed 2 times by now, and the last 2 quite close to each other so... i guess i'll just wait and hope for a patch. It's as random as it gets, first one now was disembarking the longboat in river raids, second... while shooting an arrow at a seal in Ireland. Anything can set off a CTD.

    @Nihil1375 - I am glad to hear that this workaround for crashes provided by @longjohn119 has somewhat helped to alleviate the issues you were experiencing! Please continue to update us in this thread as to whether it is a long-term fix, or if you notice the crashes returning. If they do return, please attempt the troubleshooting posted above by my colleague @Ubi-Keo and let us know if that helps at all. We can investigate further with you if you can provide us with your MSINFO and DXDIAG files in a support case as well. Regarding the frequent pop-ups regarding a new quest, this is a known issue that the team are working to resolve already; completing any nearby avenge quests should stop this from popping up. Thank you.

    @longjohn119 - Thanks again for sharing the workaround you've found regarding disabling Tobii Eye Tracking via the .ini file! I'm just wanting to reassure you that I still have the threads about aim assist not working correctly on my radar, and will be looking into those as soon as I am able. 🙂 Thanks again for bringing them to my attention!

    @ubi-woofer

    I had 8 crashes in the first 18 hours ..... Since then I have had 2 crashes in 45+ hours and one of them was after leaving the game in the menu for about 10 minutes while I fed my cats and when I came back it crashed when I came out of the menu .... Neither of the 2 crashes was repeatable

    It's not 100% but it's a lot better than it was at least for me

    Hello @longjohn119,

    Thank you for the update. Have you created a support case, by any chance with your diagnostic files, so we can investigate these crashes? If so, can you please provide us with a number? Many thanks!

    @longjohn119 I have tested this and it is definitely not a placebo and has an effect. I also switched from full aim assist to medium. Thanks for sharing. Before that, only the underclocking of my GPU saved me from constant crashes.

  • longjohn119
    Original poster 775 posts

    @kirhan30 My final results with this was I went from 8 crashes in the first 18 hours of play to 7 or 8 crashes during the next 125 hours of play or a crash every 3 or 4 days. I didn't have any crashes at all in Asgard or Jotunheim and none of the crashes were repeatable meaning I'd just go back in and replay that part without any further issues. I suspect there are still some issues with VRAM and timings during CPU transfers

    Thanks you for sharing your experience and what steps worked for you KIRHAN30 and longjohn119, I am happy to hear the stability of the game has improved.

    If the crashes do continue for you, please send us your dxdiag and msinfo system files to us, via a support case, so we can check for any patterns and make the AC team aware of this > https://www.ubisoft.com/en-gb/help/contact

    Letting us know of all the troubleshooting you have tried up until this point in your case, will be a big benefit.
