It appears you may be testing a new feature. Computer Generated Voice Acting. It seems most prevalent with the female voices, but there were a few male voices as well that seemed off.

The diction, enunciation, and delivery of the lines was _off_ and it was unnatural. Certainly helped further the uncanny valley and was, often, immersion breaking because I'm reminded I'm in a game, and not maybe participating in something.

I understand the desire to lower your budgets by removing voice actors from the equation but I would say it is not at all ready for prime time.

Please consider using voice actors. I am certain you could even have given a number of your developers/employees a small bonus to have them say lines for something as simple as the discovery tour. Their human-ness would have made this more enjoyable where your computer generated voices detracted from the experience.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

@enkidu98 where did you hear computer generated voices? I though only Shaun Hastings was the narrator in the Behind The Scenes bits.

@bielik01 Most every female voice as you talked to NPC's was computer generated. Did you do the quests?

@enkidu98 well, maybe I didn't pay enough attention to surroundings. I just wanted the sword 😅

@bielik01 I think the 'main' female NPC's are voice acted, but every other female NPC has a very unnatural voice/delivery for their lines.

@enkidu98 I play games in French or German mostly, and all the voices seem fine to me. I had to switch it early on when playing, just because the quality of the English delivery was very poor. Some of the accents and choices for the characters are just bizarre. American kids popping up out of nowhere, forced accents in the adults, and so on. I think you may unfortunately just be experiencing the rather sub-par voice direction of Valhalla in general, rather than computer generated ones. The actors are just doing very phoney accents, which is strange given some of the main cast are actually Scandinavian. The background NPC's are often gratingly bad.

The only characters who are passable in Valhalla are Eivor, and a couple of the main characters like Basim, and a few token others. Everyone else is incredibly mediocre, which struck me as a shame, as I thought the voice direction in Odyssey and Origins was actually very good.

So I have to play it dubbed, and the experience is generally better. Though this may not be perfect for you, if you don't speak another language. Valhalla comes with Russian, Japanese, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Spanish and German voice packs to download if you wish to try them.
