In most cases, Torrmentors will try to put distance between you and the player - but for certain maps with defense objectives. The Objectives are located in areas without "destructible walls" this forces tormentors to spawn ( teleport \ swim? ) just 1 - 2 feet away from you and immediately shoot their ranged attack to do insane damage.
Because they are "teleporting" so close to the player and immediately shooting - it makes it impossible to dodge and a really a case where there is no counterplay, since you have no idea beforehand where they will pop up, and the grenade doesn't affect them until they fully get out.
If Tormentor is forced to spawn ( no other available valid spawning area ) near player - then it does the Prothean big spawn animation where you see a bubble ground for 2 - 3 seconds before it spawns.
With a 2s delay before shooting. [ Best option ]
Impact Grenade \ Weapons- knocks them out of swimming animation.
Tormentor Fast Projectile damage - based on distance - Within 1 - 2 feet only does 5 - 10 damage per projectile.
Tormentor Repositions - if it "Spwans" within 5 feet of the player.

You can Go prone to Dodge, thats usualy the safest thing to do in emergency cqb Situations with tormentors

Also using doorways or side cover to strafe around them. Peek and shoot from same place they just know where to keep throwing projectiles, have to keep shifting around them or team mate makes the move around them or vice versa whilst Tormentor is focused on one player.
