The original FarCry was made by Crytek. When Ubisoft bought the rights to the franchise does that also give them permission to claim it as their original work?

I get that the games have changed alot since the original but in legal terms wouldn't this be pushing the limits of what's ethical? Or at least out of respect to the original game's developers, on a professional level?

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

In March 2006, Ubisoft acquired all rights to the Far Cry series and a perpetual license for the CryEngine version used in the development of Far Cry.[10] Ubisoft Montreal remained the principal studio developing all future Far Cry games.

so crytek had nothing to do with FAR CRY 2 FAR CRY 3 FAR CRY 3 FAR CRY Blood Dragon , FAR CRY 4 , FAR CRY Primal , FAR CRY 5 ..or Far Cry 6
as UBIOSFT owns the license for the game series .. NOT CRYTEK

CRYTEK only developed the first game of the series and yes UBIOSFT was the PUBLISHER

if you look up crytek https://www.crytek.com/games: (https://crytek.com/games) you can clearly see they they do list only FAR CRY 1 as one of the titles they made
ubi owns the rights to all the later games of the series and developed them (and yea i'm sure they paid Crytek very well for those rights )

CRYTEK went on to make the crysis games and used EA as the Publisher

You answered your own question -- they bough the rights.
