It's a single player game. It was kind of overpowered but it didn't matter that it was... because it was a single player game. Don't want that feature? Don't use it. Now nobody can use it.
Still I wouldn't say the birb is totally useless. I found it handy to collect those flying things that you have to chase. I didn't chase a single one of them. I just followed them with birb, seen where they finished and simply went there a second time and collected them once they got there. Ooooops. They didn't think about that...
Also birb.exe is pretty useful to find resources. Get a height going, scan the area, and a whole bunch of white things will show up. Takes a hell of a long time... but I finished 99% of it anyway...
