@dbgager hiya, I'm sorry to say 2 handed swords did not exist in the viking age. I studied viking history for over 4 years at University and specialised in warfare (even have excavated a viking sword in Sweden in a archaeological dig) . Two handed swords are fantastical element in the game, same as flails.
@lowlife_j-shrt tbh I'm having a similar thought process. I'm really enjoying the game so far. But to not have such an iconic weapon (yes I know swords were a rarer weapon and for the warrior elite) in a game about vikings is just stupid and a serious oversight. At least odyssey had an excuse for no hoplon shield that the devs justified to an extent. But this is unjustifiable and I can't really think of a why they've not included it.

The forum is roamed by Community Managers They can report directly to Ubisoft, so yes.

The question is, if the absence of 1h swords actually is a problem, or just a design choice (like giving us a raven or a settlement) that many people don't like and can't see the rationale for? If it is the latter, which I believe, then we are in the same situation as with Odyssey and the absence of shields. They had an argument for it, and even though people didn't like it and complained, the shield was not implemented.
My guess would be that we, even though they know that many people would like 1h swords, we won't see them implemented.
@aloninor the shield thing I got because you had the spear that worked into most of the abilities and attack you had in odessey but the lack of 1 handed swords for the player in Valhalla is just lazy you can't say they are rare then give me great swords bigger than the character and every other AI having a sword I get an axe is a big Viking thing but swords were too they weren't nearly as rare in this period as people thought

Your right about odyssey. Because of the spear they had chosen not to. Choice btw being the key word there. 1 handers were in this game, screen shots of Avor are out there with a sword sheathed to his hip. If its a design choice its a silly one that makes 0 sense. And I've heard " swords were to expensive back then". Okay, Then I shall just whip out my massive greatsword and prove that hog wash. It will take a while I predict but they will rectify this in a future dlc or update.
@fruitloops3000 I'd just like to have the option of a sword and shield or mainly an axe and sword would be my preference but swords were expensive but by the point of Vikings in England swords were common with veteran raiders and the more important people in the clan
@lowlife_j-shrt i am heavily dissapointed also seeing a double handed ulfbert makes the whole action soo bad espeacially i am a real life swordsmith and sword researcher so i am looking for realism and this realism i already skip with the fantasy looking weapons but at least expected one handed swords in game
@fruitloops3000
As far as I know the main reason for "no shield" in Odyssey were related to lessons learned from Origins. If they implement shields, people go into "turtle mode", since they wanted to push for a more agressive playstyle in Odyssey, and less defensive than Origins, they removed the shields. This is the first time that I hear that the presence of the spear was the main reason.
Where does the "swords were to expensive" explanation come from? If this is the official statement I agree - that's seems silly considering how many other npC's use swords.
@aloninor not sure it's official but it's the one floating round for the time being and yeah origins forced defense play as you had to have the shield. With odessey they did want to make it more aggressive and the spear is the off hand and all times weapons so it just worked out in their favour I guess

The 'too expensive' argument is what some people are saying on reddit, here, twitter. Its an absurd argument.
@fruitloops3000 I'd like to get the real reason for no one handed swords from Ubisoft just to see why they did it
@fruitloops3000 even if swords were expensive in this time periode, nearly every NPC used an one-handed sword. historical correct or not, it breaks the immersion that anybody can use a onehanded sword except yourself. So in my opinion thats no argument that would work. And through the finisher I have the feeling that I have killed more people with their own swords as with my own weapons.
@fgx1988 it's is immersion breaking as you say and just a stupid move to remove a staple weapon in any Armoury from the player altogether

Yeah. I agree. That's my point lol. Its stupid
slightly off topic: I hope the irony doesn't escape anyone on the fact that we can equip a shield an spear like a spartan in this one..
but no one handed swords. I really wonder how their meetings go

I know right! I thought that lol. I imagine the meeting goes like this;
Game director: so guys what can we do better this time round?
Goes quiet...
Developer #4: we could have shields again. But this time use them in both .
Game director: LOVE IT! Anything else?
Developer #7: Maybe remove swords? This way it saves us making new animations.
Game Director: [censored] genius! And maybe release them as Possible DLC. That will please the old share holders. Muhahaha!
