I am pretty sure it's related to steam controller as well Assassin's Creed Valhalla Steam Controller Issues | Ubisoft Forums
I am currently using GloSC as a third-party layer to run ACV from Steam with proper controller mapping. But this is just to cumbersome.

It is somehow related to controller input being hijacked through steam, because if i disconnect controller and launch game from steam - I am golden. If controller is turned on and I try to launch from Steam - game crashes.

@curranius I'm using a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, so it is not only to the steam controller. It is every interface with any bleutooth controller as far as I know.
If anyone can try with a Steamlink and and XBox controller then we can be sure it is for every bleutooth connected controller. I also want to know if you connect an XBox controller directly to a PC (with bleutooth) if it would generate the same issues, or that it is only when using a Steam Link

@asyncroon I am using an xbox one controller with the wireless dongle attached to the steam link. I did try using the dongle directly on the PC and the same issue occurred. I tried without the dongle via bluetooth on BOTH PC and steam link and the same issue occurred.

@asyncroon been having the same issue for the past month. i use a ps4 wireless dualshock controller and the game crashes every single time without fail. just wish ubisoft would acknowledge this issue instead of pretending it doesn’t exist 😕

I was able to play the game the other night by disabling my controller completely, launching the game via steam, and turning it back on during the (insanely long) seizure message at the beginning. The steam button message as well as the configs loaded message pops up as soon as the controller connects to the dongle on my PC and everything works perfectly fine.

    I found this post:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/comments/m8ax00/help_from_people_who_use_glosc_and_or_play_ac/

OP says this works but doesn't load his custom configs (he is disabled and needs a specific layout). I use the standard layout for xbox one controller so this is not an issue for me.

I should mention that I used SteamDB grid manager to re-add the shortcut to the game as a step before trying the controller method, but having the controller on before launching this new shortcut produced the same crash (so it's not an issue with the shortcut itself). Something on Ubisoft's side is conflicting with steam's controller connection on launch which as we all know manifested after the latest title update.

A pretty easy workaround, yet not ideal. I can finally play again, but Ubi should help this disabled dude out!

    @wookapotomas Thanks for the info!

Thing is that I never had to use GLOSC before as everything just worked with either my Switch Pro Controller or my PS4 Controller, and I would prefer to keep it that way.
The method described on reddit also gives issues that it appears to be without the Steam Link, as they start with mouse and keyboard and then turn on their controller, but for that to work for me I'd need to start up the steamlink, go to big picture mode and then connect to the game, which is not possible. The Steam Link will just stream the images, but will not let the controller take over the controls of the game in my case...

Finally got it working again last night - haven't been able to play since the title update. Streaming via Steam Link on Apple TV using a DS4 controller.

Launched the game on Steam Link via the steam shortcut (just the normal Valhalla exe. Not added using any of the 3rd party programs).

Connected the DS4 as the game was loading and got the controller connected popup during the startup videos.

Controller wasn't working on the main menu (as in game thought I was using KB/M) - same issue as above - Steam Link just streams the images but doesn't seem to recognize the controller.

Went back to PC, into options and changed the controller from KB/M to Xbox Controller. Worked fine from there - good to be able to play again!

So definitely an issue when starting the game through Big Picture with a controller. Seems fine starting with KB/M and then switching once in game. Hope it gets fixed properly soon but in the meantime hope this workaround helps!

It is not a solution at all but mostly a bypass of the Steam In-home stream issue if you nVidia card. Since DirectX 12 became mainstream, I found a lot better experience using Moonlight Streaming (https://moonlight-stream.org/) with GeForce Experience. It works with AC Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, etc. and over the 5Ghz Wi-Fi network I'm able to get stable 60fps 1080p with AC Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla runs as well but it has some different FPS drop issues.
Edit: The above option has full controller support.
