(These forums are a nightmare to use so I'm hoping the mods can find some way to embed the video)

It's a great video and I'd recommend anybody who is remotely interested in the Odyssey vs Valhalla debate to watch it (it's only 15 minutes).

The basic gist is that going back to Odyssey in 2021 after playing Valhalla is a breath of fresh air that exposes the flaws of the latter. He said he never gave Odyssey a fair shake because he bought into the narrative of it being a "good game but a bad AC game" but now realises that the fact that it doesn't try to be an AC game is why it works.

    - He concludes that the stealth in Odyssey is better because it's functional. The stealth in Valhalla is broken.

    - Despite both being RPGs Valhalla is signifcantly dumbed down in this department.

    - Despite both containing choices, choices in Odyssey are more fluid.

    - Odyssey is more successful in conveying the tone it wants, even if it's not a tone he particularly enjoys.

This is what he had to say:

Re Odyssey: "I see a game that knows what it is, chooses a clear path and does everything it can to deliver on that experience."

"I love the older games, that's where I fell in love with the series but it's painfully obvious at this point that these new ones are never going to feel like they used to. Valhalla, in fact, taught me that you can add hoods, social stealth and one hit assassinations and you can still miss out on that feeling."

"Playing Odyssey brings me back to the phrase 'it's a good game but not a good AC game'. After Valhalla I'd argue that Odyssey is a great game and I'm glad it didn't try to be an AC game because we've now seen what that looks like. At the end of the day I think I found out that I just prefer a good game."

And that kind of sums up my feelings as well. I think as time goes by the hardcore AC fans will grow to appreciate Odyssey more when it becomes apparent that superficial implementation of the old mechanics won't grant them the feeling we lost.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
