The vendors outside each DZ main entrance occasionally sell DZ exclusive gear such as the Hollow Man mask, Claws Out holster and System Corruption gear set. However, you need DZ resources to buy them.

Currently (June 2021), there are two ways to get DZ resources:

    1. Deconstruct contaminated gear within the DZ and extract the resulting resources. After a successful extraction, the resources will be in your mailbox. However, this puts you at risk of encountering a rogue agent before completing an extraction, and losing whatever you picked up.

    2. Farm boxes in the DZ. Any DZ resources you find are immediately added to your resources, and cannot be lost if you die.

Boxes containing DZ resources look like thinner versions of the boxes that contain electronics/ceramics:

The subreddit has maps showing the locations of these boxes:

    https://reddit.com/r/thedivision/comments/jfieho/map_dz_credits_dark_zone_south/

    https://reddit.com/r/thedivision/comments/n146oh/dark_zone_east_dz_resource_map_and_how_to_get_dz

The best time to farm is just after a DZ has switched from invaded to non-invaded. All boxes refresh when this happens, so you have a better chance of getting resources. Note that resource boxes in an invaded DZ cannot be farmed as they are all open.

In terms of effort, it's possible to farm 30 resources within half an hour. For reference, the most expensive item @ L40 costs 152 DZ resources.

Boxes go on cool-down before they can be farmed again. This lasts for about an hour.

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Thanks. I’ve been farming these loot boxes every time I venture into the DZ (which hasn’t been that often yet) and I’ve almost hit enough to buy something. It’s very little effort and a great excuse to explore the DZ. I’ve only been in DZ south but it’s a very cool map.

While I enjoyed the DZ with virtually no PVP in D1 I must admit that once I heard that D2's DZs are tiny and crowded to force human combat I stayed out of them and never bothered touching them.

Farming boxes in the DZ sounds interesting, but how does that mean "no PVP"? Aren't you still going to encounter lots of human players? Aren't you going to plenty of troll squads with massively OP'd gear whose only concept of fun is to go hunting solo, under-geared players?

TBH those things are the main reason I stay out of the DZ. I might not mind fighting an occasional human that is equally geared and experienced as me, but I am not a masoquist and it will be many months before I will have top gear or a proper squad to venture into the DZs safely.

Or are you saying that it is possible to go box-farming without having to meet those trolls?

No, there is always the possibility you'll run across a rogue, though that will depend on the server and time of day. If you do meet one, there is no need to fight them. Either run or let them kill you (preferably while sarcastically emoting). You get to keep the DZ resources either way.

I was rereading the thread and had a thought:. Since we already have multiple DZs, why not make each DZ have a different flavor?

    For example:
(Just an example, other vatiations possible)

    • One DZ with tough PvE but no PvP.
    • One DZ for single players (no teams) PvP.
    • One DZ for team PvP.

Reminder - this thread is intended as a PSA for people looking to obtain DZ resources. Instead of derailing this one, discussions on the nature of the DZ are better off in their own thread.

Understood. The problem is that the thread does not really give any good options. The best advice is (1) go after boxes only, and (2) die a lot while giving the finger to the one killing you.

Sorry, but that is no fun at all, and we play games to enjoy ourselves, and most of us are not masoquists. So unless the DZ changes at least a little, it is largely pointless for PvE or undergeared players.

The Division 1 DZ was a lot better in that regard. There was a chance of encountering trolls whose fun is to hunt the under-geared, but it was reasonably easy to avoid them. Ultimately it made it fun even for PvE or undergeared players. The way the DZ is designed in D2 I have no desire to go there and I know many others that feel the same.

This thread gave me some hope that it could be made worth playing but after reading it all several times I fear that the DZ in D2 remains a cesspool and that there is no decent enjoyable method to earn DZ resources. Frankly, we are better off making do without them.

@xmdead Agree with everything you've mentioned here. The DZ is full of OP gangs that get off on ruining your evening!

@Ubi-Lucipus or @Ubi-tobbee can the thread be locked please? I'd rather it not derail into another argument about the DZ or PvP when it's meant as a simple PSA.

@xmdead Div1 DZ was and still is the best DZ 🙂 If I had to choose that is.

@xmdead sounds good to me but the devs are full of disappointment and get off seeing people lose their gear to rogues

    Why is this thread pinned?

"Collect resources from boxes and hope no one shoots at you" isn't exactly a "how to farm the DZ without PvP".

  • dagrommit
    Original poster 789 posts

@iii_hammer_iii I didn't ask for it to be pinned, but I assume because "how to get DZ currency" was a frequent enough question.

I also have all these issues. But a part of me also sort of loves it. I’m not sure I’ll ever have enough time to figure my build out to enjoy it in there. But it’s supposed to be the worst place on planet earth, in a world that’s gone to [censored]. And it really is. Hahah
