Re: [Ubisoft](you seem to like to try the patience of potential customers)
I was hoping for swordfights also and digging up treasure chests. I know a lot of the guys wanted the sword fights during boarding- the thing is though that that could be very impractical when you are playing as the captain of the ship without other players as crewmates. Because this might require too much time to take over the ship when other players and computer controlled opponents are patrolling the area. I had hoped though that Ubisoft would at least provide sword fights on land when time is not critical. I want to play as the captain of the ship with it totally under my command (without crewmates)- without the busy work of running around patching holes and dropping cannonballs in cannons ( I've played some Sea of Thieves- it's a beautiful game but, there's too much busy work in it and constantly moving the camera around in 1st person perspective gameplay gives me eyestrain). Digging up treasure chests was hoped for, but again, Ubisoft would have to implement some way of doing it- imagine trekking onto an island or into the jungle for minutes to get back to the ship to find it sunk by a player that had passed by (Remember, in Sea of Thieves, most people have a crew of 2 or 3 or 4 people, some of whom can guard the ship). I very much liked the Idea of forming pirate gangs, each person in command of their own ship. I have friends who are fans of the pirate theme- I was hoping to play multiplayer with them online ( I know it is a multiplayer game- that's some of what I want in the game).
It seems though, that instead of trying to give us some more of the more interesting aspects of a pirate game, Ubisoft has wasted time putting in chopping down trees for wood, feeding and supplying drinks to the crew so they don't mutiny, hunting animals. The game that was shown in 2018 wasn't perfect, but you must admit the art design was gorgeous- the ships, the cloudy skies, the landscapes, the ocean mists, the wind. It was the most artistically beautiful looking pirate game I've seen back then. Have you seen Ubisoft's presentation of Skull and Bones gameplay at the E3 conference in 2018? How could the company that had such a fantastic art direction for this game mess this up?
Another thing is, I hope there is the Kraken, a ghost ship, and a Davy Jones character would have been great.
Imagine a Davy Jones character who is the Ghoul King of the ocean depths - a skeleton specter of the sea with a cloak of flowing green seaweed that is the character that is in charge of respawns - the ocean's version of the grim reaper of sorts. When you die at sea, he rises from a Spanish treasure ship graveyard, his seaweed cloak flowing ghostly-like in the ocean current in a cuts scene and he must be bartered with to return you to the world of the living in the game. Davy Jones was fabled in myth to be the devil of the ocean depths- hasn't Ubisoft ever heard about making a deal with the devil- pirates were evil. Sea of Thieves has ship of the damned that it puts players on when they die. Ubisoft has missed so many great ideas.
Another thing is, I don't know why they didn't incorporate a beautiful old world spinning nautical globe in the discovery of easter egg locations as a log screen in the game- when you find a location, it would be recorded on that globe.
They missed too many good ideas. At this point, what was a purchase for me for a pirate game might stay on the shelf at the store. Does Ubisoft want to make sales?
Enough people in the past have said Ubi will mess this up. We have yet to see..........................
After many years of waiting, the ships don't look as good, basically nothing in this game looks as good as what was shown in 2018. There's no kraken, no ghost ship- this game wasn't worth waiting 5 years for- IT CAN SIT ON THE SHELF. NO MONEY FROM THIS PERSON.
Some people will buy anything from a game developer, no matter how poor their vision is. In actuality, Ubisoft never had a definite vision, they spent years of shuffling through lead developers and apparently have many annoyed employees that won't vocalize their complaints about that company publicly - though after reports about the company online, it's clear that is the case. This game is Ubisoft's attempt to salvage their mess.
A teenage kid though is only interested in playing a pirate game, no matter the quality. My friends saw this game - they're disappointed with it. I asked them what they thought about it- they decided to stick with Sea of Thieves. There are better uses for the money they earn, which is understood. It is unfortunate in that industry that so many game development companies treat their employees like garbage.
My friends and I have PS5 game consoles- it's fantastic console (that's honesty). What Ubisoft is trying to do is salvage their mess (that's honesty). And they are hoping they'll find enough people that will buy that mess.
I've worked at a company in the past where what they cared about most was the dollar. I tried to get them time and time again to make a better product that a customer would say wow at, a product the customer would want. I used to build products with the customer in mind, not the company and time and time again my efforts were appreciated by the customer. It brought in more customers and more business to that company, but day after day, it was a struggle with management, and they didn't care past the dollar. So, I'm doing what I can and voting with my money.
It's a message Ubisoft may someday come to understand.
By the way, that company, they went out of business eventually because they decayed on the inside day after day.
GO ahead buy the game. You'll have fun with it. There are a lot of people though that understand what I'm saying, that knew this game had the potential to be a lot better than what it is. I've seen Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Odyssey and for people who like that theme, it offers a lot- It's made very well. But when Ubisoft comes to look at their sales numbers, Skull and Bones will post low compared to what they had hoped for, AND THAT YOU WILL READ IN THE INTERNET HEADLINES. I liked the naval combat that was shown in Skull and Bones 2018. There are developers under anonymity that have been interviewed by game article magazines that worked at that company that have said unfavorable things about the game- AND THEY WORKED ON IT. This has happened over the months, there's one article on the internet now. If Ubisoft's goal was to make a lot of money on this game, their sales numbers a going to be far below what they had hoped for. Cherry coating won't make it better.
I am one of the people that has waited since 2017 to purchase the Skull and Bones game. I saw the leaked tutorial game footage a month or so ago. I can not figure out why after seeing that footage you didn't leave the gameplay like what was shown in 2018- back then the ships and most of the gameplay looked stunning. the tutorial leaked was honestly lackluster. I can not figure out who wants to do busy work in a pirate game of feeding and supplying drinks to the crew and who wants to harvest trees for wood for crafting. In 2018, there was gameplay I thought should be added to make the game more interesting- a lot of people thought this. You know you are going to receive many different opinions in a forum- but do you think the tutorial that was shown honestly was an advancement?
I still have hopes for a good pirate game, but after seeing that tutorial and the new logo and design shown in that leaked tutorial, what was a purchase for me for a pirate game- well it might not happen. And then, you decide to delay showing more game footage around E3/Summer Game Fest time. Who are these people in charge of game design at your company?
I don't know why Ubisoft does things the way they do. I don't know why they wouldn't give the kids sword and pistol gameplay- at least on land, so they get some in the game. I know many of them were fans of Assassin's Creed Black Flag- I've seen a lot of the gameplay. I saw the captain Morgan's outfit- the plumed hat, the red pirate coat, the many pistoled belt- it was interesting for a pirate.
I've seen the gameplay of Skull and Bones from different sources (A lot of different sources) in the past. I've seen the trailers. In the 2018 trailer, that mysterious dark ship I suspect is a ghost ship coming out of the stormfront with the eerie sound effects- hopefully, they put that in the game. I don't know though why they don't incorporate that beautiful old world nautical globe that was shown that the pirate spins in his hand in the trailer as a way to log discoveries in the game on in some sort of a menu screen.
The kids wanted to name their ships. Some of them went nuts over the kraken. I saw a beautiful, tall waterfall in the Black Flag game with a rainbow from the light hitting the water. I don't know why Ubisoft doesn't put that sort of thing in the game that is a tropical bird habitat- If you find it, you get a parrot for your hideout (girls might like that).
Some old footage of the game showed blue moonlight cascading down at night. Imagine how that would look with raytracing (this game was started though before the PS5 came out), shining though the breaks in the clouds at night with a big visually dramatic full moon in the night sky and the pirate ships silhouetted below on the ocean. Colored stained-glass windows for the stern of the pirate ships would look cool at night, lit up by the lanterns inside the cabin. Have you ever seen pictures of the Coliseum at night with the colored accent lighting around the archways of the structure? What about that sort of thing for the stern of the pirate ships at night?
An abstract, multicolored sunset that looks like sea of flames because of the cloud layer, with a winged, pitchforked devil cloud in it might have been fun for the kids to spot in the sky. The wind does pull clouds at times to make them look wispy, and the colors at sunset could illuminate them to make them look like wisps of flame.
I had intended to buy maybe 7 to 10 copies for myself and friends if the game had been like what was shown in 2018. It wasn't. I'm voting with my money: no copies of this game will be bought by me for my friends or myself. My friends and I liked what was shown in 2018 and hoped it would get better- It got worse. We are no longer interested in this game= No money from us. They will be playing Sea of Thieves I suspect.
@JuanRackham
Juan I understand what you are saying. I will look at game reviews when it comes out. You must understand though, I'm a fan of the pirate theme in entertainment, I'm 52 yrs. old- not a teenager. I don't buy a lot of games because what the developers make these days is largely unappealing to me- I'm particular and the money many times is better spent elsewhere. In 2018 I loved the look of the game, and it probably would have had the kraken and a ghost ship, which very much interested me. For me, the ships, sea, land, and skyline looked better in 2018 and I liked the wind mechanic. I understand though that many kids wanted to play as the pirate, not the ship, and wanted swordplay and pistol play- at least on land. This to me is obvious. Is this not obvious to you? I understand why they liked Black Flag - because it gave them a more well-rounded pirate experience- it was fuller to them when it came to the pirate fantasy. I don't hate Ubisoft- my comments are not to incite hatred; they are honest ones from me. I would have bought this game in 2018 if they had left it the way it was. This forum though is for discussion, opinions, and feedback. And when Ubisoft wanted those things from the kids, why, in 5 yrs. of this forum have they spent so much time ignoring what the kids have been trying to make clear to them. This was not going to be Black Flag, we all knew this, but why couldn't Ubisoft give the kids more of what they wanted in this game?
By the way Juan, I've been having more fun with the Nintendo Switch than the PS5. I loved Mario Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion 3, and sometimes play Zelda Breath of the Wild- they are great made games. I had hoped Ubisoft's pirate game would be great, but honestly, I don't see that happening. I even wrote to Nintendo suggesting a Mario/Luigi open world spaghetti western game for the 2 Italian plumber boys- with spaghetti western music. Wario and Waluigi could be outlaws. Nintendo didn't bite.
@Red_Demon10 Then the forum really is a marketing /PR sham Ubisoft uses to try to cover their [censored]. The kind of thing that I consider trivial.
Have fun with the game, these forums aren't worth my time anymore.
@JuanRackham Juan, if that is the case that Ubisoft had no intention of listening to any of what was written in this forum, then the making of this forum was trivial to begin with. Why even bother to have one if they were intent on doing totally what they wanted from the start? They should not bother doing these if all they want are a bunch of yes men- for it serves no real purpose. Just make the game and release it. The forum was a waste of time from the start. Have fun playing the pirate game- honestly. My friends and I might look at the reviews when it comes out, but at this point we don't expect to buy it. And Juan, as for gauging what the market wanted, well, we'll see how Ubisoft's sales numbers are about a week or two after Nov. 8. I liked the 2018 presentation Juan, but they changed the art style too much for my liking.
Good luck playing the pirate game.
@JuanRackham

I will no longer be buying this game. If they had left it the way it was in 2018 I'd have purchased it. The ships look worse now and move worse now, the landscapes look worse, the sky looks worse. There's no frigate ships. No kraken, No ghost ship. basically, 90% of this game is worse than the game footage shown in 2018- Did you see Skull and bones Sea dad goes wild game footage? The game looked amazing back then, it looks like garbage now by comparison. I like pirate games when they are done well, but this game is not done well.
Some people have poor taste. This new logo is disappointing- It is only a logo, still, it's disappointing. It looks like graffiti that might be painted at the railroad station in Chicago by a teenage punk kid. Why yellow on the flag? Why does it look like brushstrokes from a house painter's brush? The old logo was a lot better, and of course the old-style font of the letters was more fitting.
When the directors of this project years ago said they were inspired by Fortnite, me and a lot of other pirate entertainment fans thought this is not helpful to describing what is going to be interesting in a pirate game. If they meant they wanted it to be a big money maker like Fortnite, then that was understandable. Being inspired by the style of Fortnite though is not understandable! There are some ingredients that work well together in entertainment and some that do not- you wouldn't throw a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a bowl of French onion soup, would you?
When they said they wanted to modernize the classic pirate fantasy, again, bad way to describe it. If they had said they wanted to present the classic pirate fantasy in a way that would appeal to modern audiences, that would be understandable. I enjoy the romance of the pirate theme in entertainment- the adventure, the epic environments (sea and skyline and landscapes), the hunt for treasure, the grand sailing ships, the artistic symbolism of death that was present on pirate flags and ornamental woodwork on the pirate ships. The swordsmanship and pistol fights. From what was leaked in the tutorial game footage trailer, it looks like Ubisoft might have missed the mark for what would be appealing to a lot of pirate entertainment fans. The old game footage from 2018 that can be found on the internet from many sources was much better in many ways. And the 2018 trailer was great.
