The Difference Between Mo-Cap and Animated Cutscenes
I’ve got almost 100 hours on Valhalla and I’ve still got stuff to do. I definitely think it’s one my top entries in the franchise, for me the only thing that lets the game down is the acting delivery. Don’t get me wrong, the voice acting is great, I love Cecilie Stenspil as Evior and I’m sure Magnus Bruun will be just as good when I inevitably play it again soon.
The problem I’m getting at is my frustration when I see these fantastic cutscenes like Eivor talking with Basim in Cent or the brothel scene in Essexe. I could watch these all day, the facial expressions and body language is a thousand times better than the bland and lifeless cutscenes that really started to irritate me further into the game.
I can appreciate that motion capture is expensive and demanding for the actors. As an actor myself I can sympathise, but it mainly frustrates me as the two biggest games I played this year: Red Dead 2 and Valhalla, have a noticeable difference in the quality of acting. I know Red Dead 2 had a much larger development process and didn’t have interactive dialogues, but I think sacrificing these for future titles will be for the best. Characters like Hjorr or Hunwald are an example of a character I couldn’t connect with, especially at the end of the game, Hunwald’s last scene is hard to watch as it isn’t mo-capped and things are glitching, the voice acting doesn’t match the animations. What those characters did good in vocal characterisation they lacked in visual characterisation is what I’m getting at.
I think it’s a shame because this is really the only thing that brought the quality down for me. It might just be a problem for me as an actor as I would expect high standards. I would suggest a smaller scale game to enable a fully mo-capped story, but this doesn’t mean going back to isolated cities because personally I love the exploration and Valhalla does it right. I just couldn’t get over the beauty in scenes like the final Odin scene, it was fantastic but then there’s the funeral after the Hamtunscire arc where characters are literally floating. I hope Ubisoft can see the error in this, as both Odyssey and Valhalla lack good delivery and it really affected my immersion and connection to certain characters.
