@berzerka happened to me as well. I threw the box over the cliff, then went back down and the box had respawned. I again brought it back up then I was able to trigger dialogue and finish it.

As the title says when looting dead bodies/containers I don't always receive silver/trinkets/trade goods. Has happened many times.
