@fylkirpanzer definitely, hopefully the dlc will have some more grounded armour. But again, one handed swords are needed. They can't deliver a game that promises 'a full viking experience' and not having proper viking swords, like imagine how awesome it'd be to have an ulfberht sword
@raman1972 a few people (including myself) have started posts about this. There's no sense in not having them in as they were a key weapon to viking and Anglo-Saxon warriors. They have to be patched in
@czelious I mean, Wikipedia is not a great source. I've written papers about the importance of swords to the vikings and Anglo-Saxons ar University. You're right in that were heirlooms, social symbols and good swords were very expensive. That said, they are one of the only human-made tools that are specifically designed for war. Majority of swords found from the viking age show signs of use by looking at the blades (stress fractures and potential nicks in the blades). This can be seen in swords found in hedeby in Denmark show this as well as from hundreds of viking burials in England. Plus, looking at a lot of warrior burials from the viking age, a lot of injuries were inflicted by swords. A famous example is the Repton burial in England. A viking warrior was killed by slash to his pelvis and upper thigh by a sword (cut mark that cut mark is too narrow to be an axe). Plus you have the St Brice day massacre where many Danes were found with sword marks on their skeletons.
One handed swords were a rarer weapon in the viking age as they were expensive to maintain and make, but they were vital to the warrior elites as well as being more reliable weapons in battle when well made.
Overall, having them in the game and usable by Eivor is really important because of their symbolic importance, use in battle and overall importance to the warrior elite in the viking age. As I've said many times before, they need to be added also from a a person's preferred gameplay style it's kinda a weird design flaw not having normal one handed swords, but having oversized 'long swords' that are almost bigger than the character....
I've also started a post about this. If enough people make noise or complaints about it, hopefully they'll patch it in. It's nonsense not having a proper one handed viking sword in the game
@czelious sorry, I did skim read your post and missed out the bottom part of it. I'm a huge viking/Anglo saxon warfare nerd hence why I chose to study it at university. It always annoys me hearing quotes saying that 'swords weren't used in battle' when nearly all recent historians archaeologists disagree.
Okay, I am so excited for this game but I am a bit disappointed that there are no one handed swords in the game. Can any ubisoft official confirm whether this is the case and why? Just seems like a really bizarre decision due to their use and importance to a viking age warrior
@madness3v3 I hope they do bring them in, literally makes no sense
The game needs some work. I've been playing it for 30+ hours now and have noticed combat, free running, npc and environmental bugs and glitches, some have been game breaking . The game is great and has the potential to be phenomenonal, but work is needed. Plus, I'm still fuming there are no one handed swords in the game... Such an iconic viking age weapon that we players can't use it just crap and a huge oversight.
Yes to this post. Need this to happen ASAP
I've literally lived a breathed viking warfare for half a decade I specialised on it in uni and am part of a reenactment groups and archaeological teams, it really really frustrates me that there are no one handed. I've literally written a paper on the significance of swords to the viking and Anglo saxon warrior elites and they were the symbols of the retainers, Lords and Kings. Having a sword marked you out as a warrior and not a levied soldier. Almost all my mates feel the same and they aren't even history nerds. They NEED to rectify this.
@madness3v3 here's a petition for one handed swords to be added in someone has set up http://chng.it/WycqpHVSQQ: (http://chng.it/WycqpHVSQQ)

@fylkirpanzer I get what you mean. Dialling it back a bit ua great, but they've gone from one extreme to another. A quest like that would be awesome

@fylkirpanzer how awesome would it be to wear an full chain mail armour? Tbh I'm literally sticking with the raven clan armour, the brigadier or the carolingian set (minus the Cape) as they look the least fantasy/ott
@squaretoshoot it's in the bear skill tree towards the upper left portion. It allows you hold any two weapons in one hand, including a great sword and shield. Personally I think it looks silly, but each to their own
@barryscott275 yeah, it is borderline mocking... Like loads of locations just have piillleess of normal swords... Its just like ffs

@dtheawesome9010 I think they'll add it in either in the dlc or as part of the store stuff so they can make a buck off it
