I'm enjoying the game but I prefer the story / exploration to the combat. I loved AC Odyssey and I thought it was enjoyable and well balanced for me but Valhalla combat is very difficult. I am playing on the easiest possible settings. The purpose of super easy mode I think should be that basically anyone can pick up the game and have fun with it.
The first problem is shielded ememies. One of the first skills or abilities I get should be a shield breaker like the three tier upgradeable variant from ACO where you grab the shield etc.. I noticed early on in the gameplay that the parry doesn't seem to register very often. I see an attack incoming, I hit parry, I get knocked back and take damage??? as my power level has increased I am smashing shields away from normal enemies quite easily which is how it should be but that's me in a power level 20 area at level 100.
When I tried to fight (spoiler alert)
Her level was 90 and I could not complete the fight until I was over level 100. I just ran around the countryside looking for arrows and health with a walking shield following me for about 20 minutes. Not a thrilling experience. I got a few lucky hits with arrows but there is definitely something wrong with melee combat. I was unable to block any of her hits only dodging worked. I'm ready for the pro gamers to tell me I'm doing it all wrong and I should be ashamed of myself playing on easy mode but isn't the game to have broad appeal?
The glorious visions of Britain are a sight to behold, a work of art. The colour pallette, the plants, trees, the rock textures, the brickwork on buildings and a million other tiny details that I know of my home country are breathtaking. The story is great, and the voice acting is fantastic. An amazing game but please tweak the combat for all player ability levels. It ruins the experience.
It's a terrible game in it's own right let alone as an AC title. It's too late to change the wrong decisions made at the conception stage, instead they'll just keep polishing the turd to try and make it shine.
All we can do is look forward to the next game with a different team and hope for better. I'm not letting this put me off AC games unless the next one is bad as well.
That's the entire problem with the game ..... It's either Melee or No Way ...... Many of us like ranged attacks with bows and the bows are simply broken and the skill branch for archers is joke with a bunch of garbage that doesn't actually fit that style ..... They basically turned AC in another melee combat game like a thousand others already out there while there are only a handful of games in the last decade that had good bows and AC USED TO BE one of them ..... Not any more ..... It's just yet another in a long line of melee only combat games
They may as well have called the game For Honor: Valhalla .......
This exactly. In AC Odyssey I created a ranged specialist with ranged skills, ranged abilities and ranged armour with headshot buffs. I could fight a boss MY WAY which even meant sometimes climbing up a wall out of the way and raining down arrows. It isn't possible in this game to specialise ranged or stealth assassin only and that is a huge step backward. It was my first thought months ago when the game was announced in more detail, I remember thinking I will probably still have good ranged abilities because they talked of throwing axes and such. I didn't know that would be tied to adrenaline and you'd only get one throw, or that we would be unable to gather wood and craft arrows. It's like they've gone out of their way to nerf the bow skills. Why?
I appreciate Valtyrnine's very in depth explanation of the melee combat mechanics. It's complicated though, a dance of timing, reflexes, skill and practice - hardly the pick up and play friendly experience I expected. Who knew you'd need to watch youtube videos simply to learn how to play. If timing is such an issue with the parry then they have seriously dropped the ball on visual cues to players, and in their training mission.
